What We Do
Since opening in 2007, we have partnered with artists and local communities to present dynamic exhibitions, commissions from diverse artists at all stages of their careers. We care for three collections: Woking’s heritage, Joan Hurst sculpture and Ingram Collection.
We work with our communities to explore connections between contemporary culture and heritage and present a changing contemporary art programme.
We are rooted in the cultural, social, and economic life of Woking, Surrey, and the Southeast of England.
Our innovative learning and education programme offers creative activities for families, schools, and adults, with a special emphasis on inspiring creativity and supporting health and wellbeing. Through participatory initiatives, we empower participants and artists to co-create, fostering vibrant cultural dialogue.
Our Charitable Purpose
As an independent charitable trust Lightbox Gallery & Museum is committed to enriching lives through the transformative power of visual arts and heritage.
Our mission is to inspire creativity and foster a connected community by providing welcoming and inclusive access to art and culture. We champion the value of creativity by offering programmes that support health and wellbeing, engage with schools and young people, and provide opportunities for artists.
We address society’s growing need for community, wellbeing, and creativity, especially for those facing barriers. Recognised for our impact, we are the only Arts Council England visual arts National Portfolio Organisation in Surrey. Our programmes are supported by Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Garfield Weston who support our vital work with artists, heritage and audiences.
The Building
Lightbox Gallery is an iconic, purpose-built gallery and museum designed by Marks Barfield Architects, the firm behind the London Eye. Opened in 2007, the building was groundbreaking for its time, with environmental sustainability at the core of its design.
Located in the cultural heart of Woking, Lightbox is not just a place for art; it is a community hub offering spaces for reflection, relaxation, and cultural engagement. Our award-winning exhibitions and programmes extend beyond our gallery walls, creating a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Woking and the wider Southeast region.
"This project is very special to me because it was initiated by the local community. I loved the fact that a group of local people got together and collectively identified the need for a cultural and arts centre in Woking and then worked so hard over many years to realise it. That need has been validated many times over by the 1.5mill visitors, the 500,000 school children, not to mention the many arts and community groups of all ages that use the building on a regular basis.
